Personal Story from ED |

Explained below is a bit of a saga that
happened to me a few weeks ago. I still haven’t established exactly what
happened; maybe one of you could shed some light on it………
Monday 15th
August 2005
Quite an exciting day, as this is the day that I am
sending out the first issue of the magazine! Obviously I’m quite
apprehensive as to how it will be received and I am in and out of my
eBay a/c, checking for the subscribers e-mail’s etc.One final check and
I’m ready to go, so, as usual I input my user name and password
‘PASSWORD INVALID’
No problem, I’ve
obviously miss-typed it, so I try again,
‘PASSWORD INVALID’
Haven’t had a glass of wine yet today, must have typed it
incorrectly again
‘PASSWORD INVALID’
Ok, this isn’t good! Panic ensues! I can’t get into my
a/c at all. I check my e-mail to see if there is anything there and
there is e-mail from eBay regarding me changing my e-mail address, which
I didn’t do.
PANIC! PANIC! PANIC!
So, the obvious
questions on my mind were ‘How on earth had my password been changed?’
and, ‘What time does the off licence open?’
I’m now starting to get one of those stress headaches, the one that is
normally reserved for the children at the end of the day when they start
going berserk around the
house at bedtime!!
So, the next thing I
did was go on to the home page and try
searching for one of my items – yep –
there it was. I clicked on that and then viewed ‘sellers other items’
only to find that two different types
of mobile phone were being sold from my
a/c. Now the odd thing here is that they had replaced two of the other
items I was selling and they had picked up my original buy it now price
of £3. Are you all still following this???
I waited until 2 o Clock (only available
from 2pm – 6pm) before I could talk ‘live’ to somebody from the security
dept.
And after much too-ing and fro-ing the
lovely lady ‘Helen’ explained that my a/c had been ‘hijacked’ by a third
party. I had to change all my passwords and the listings were removed
from my a/c.
Now, I use the term ‘hijack’ loosely,
because I don’t think it was. I think it may have been some eBay cock
up! Why on earth would someone ‘hijack’ my a/c to sell his or her
expensive phones for £3 each? That didn’t make sense to me and neither
did it make sense to the 18 people that had sent me messages asking if
the auction was genuine.
So, what can I gain from this experience?
Not a lot! I still don’t know what happened! If anything like this has
happened to you, let us know, as it would be interesting to see if this
is a regular occurrence!
Note from
Wizzardorea:
The exact same thing happened to
me a couple of years ago! I was quite new to Ebay at the time and
totally naive. I found that someone had hacked into My Ebay account and
totted up almost £500.00 in Ebay fees onto my account by listing Mobile
Phones Featured on the homepage ... I was inundated with emails from
PROSPECTIVE CUSTOMERS. I too started to panick ... I don't to this day
know how but I managed to speak online in real time with an Ebay
representative who was really nice and helped me sort my account out and
refund all payments debited from my account. You now know why I post
copies of all spoof emails on the Forum for you ladies to view ... I
would hate for anyone to get caught out Like I did!
NEVER DIVULGE YOUR EBAY USER ID OR
PASSWORD TO ANYONE VIA EMAIL!

Feedback
– To Leave or Not To Leave? |

Feedback – it’s the crux of your business, but it can
also be your downfall! If you have a bad experience on eBay, you
should be within your rights to express your opinion – in a mature
and un-abusive way. The only problem with that is the chances are –
you will receive bad feedback in response, regardless of whether you
have done something wrong or not. So what can you do? My humble
advice is this – think really carefully about the experience you’ve
had before leaving someone negative experience. If you have
purchased something and either the goods were very delayed or faulty
etc, make sure you contact the buyer first to see if they are
willing to refund your money. In most cases an honest seller would
rather refund your money than risk their reputation or negative
feedback. From my own personal experience it seems to be the newer
members who are very quick to throw in a negative feedback – either
they don’t know how to contact the buyer or they are just out to
cause trouble. These members don’t last very long at all – and it’s
incredibly unfair to genuine new members. I’ve noticed on numerous
auctions that sellers are refusing to have anyone with less than 10
feedbacks buying from them. They’ve obviously been stung before –
but maybe a little harsh as we all had to start somewhere!
If you have sold something and received negative
feedback, it doesn’t hurt to add a follow up comment. I always
think, whenever I read someone’s bad feedback, a concise follow up comment blows the bad comment out
of the window. Whether it is an apology or a rather smart reply to
an uncooperative buyer. If you are new to eBay and want to
legitimately build up your feedback section quickly, your best
option is to buy some very low priced items from different sellers.
Books are great for this as you can purchase them for very little,
receive some nice feedback from the seller (as long as you paid etc)
and you have a book to read!! Cd’s are another good way of doing
this. It’s best to search ‘items ending within the hour with no
bids’ – you can build your feedback up in no time this way as well
as your music collection. Also, list a couple of items from around
your house that you no longer need and go out of your way with the
service you provide. If anyone needs any help with listing their
items or is confused with the bidding process and how to contact
buyers – I can help you with all that – before it gets to the
‘NEGATIVE FEEDBACK’ stage!
There will always be troublemakers on eBay, but if
you are an honest seller/buyer – this will always shine through –
regardless of a negative feedback!
